The Role

LAM’s Sustainable Investment & ESG team is responsible for deepening integration of material sustainability considerations across our investment platforms. This includes partnering with our portfolio managers on further enhancing their investment processes, coordinating and guiding the engagement and stewardship activities of our senior portfolio managers and experienced industry analysts, and developing and launching new sustainable investing strategies. The team also works directly with clients around the world to understand their sustainable investment objectives and develop innovative solutions.

This role will report to the Stewardship Lead at Lazard, and can be based anywhere in Europe or the US. The role will be focused on delivering on our proxy voting responsibilities including overseeing our proxy voting process and working closely with our analysts and portfolio managers across all platforms on proxy related corporate engagement. 

This is an exciting opportunity to work in a fast growing team within a large global organisation. This newly created role will be central to raising the profile of the firm’s sustainable investing capabilities internally and externally. The position requires an individual with a passion for sustainable investing, strong knowledge of corporate governance, proxy voting and investment stewardship, and a creative entrepreneurial approach to their work. 

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Help with execution of the firm’s proxy voting process and ensure alignment with our Proxy Voting policy and Global Governance Principles
  • Partner with senior portfolio managers and experienced industry analysts to provide advice and guidance as they engage with company management teams and board members on proxy related issues
  • Conduct research and quantitative analysis, producing presentations for internal and external use to contribute to the development and execution of stewardship processes, data analytics, and reporting
  • Engagement with proxy advisors
  • Engagement with clients on investment stewardship and engagement outcomes related to proxy proposals
  • Engagement with regulators on governance and voting issues and public policy engagement in the space of corporate governance and investment stewardship
  • Engagement with other external stakeholders such as NGOs etc.
  • Identify opportunities to host bespoke client events related to ESG and sustainability
  • Develop and enable publication of standardized proxy reporting
  • Identify opportunities to take ownership and responsibility for other projects/activities that contribute to the success of the firm’s approach to stewardship and impactful ownership

Key Skills and Experience:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of proxy voting and corporate governance, sustainability and working technical proficiency/command of investment management concepts
  • 3-5 years of professional experience in a relevant asset management or investment role
  • Self-motivated, entrepreneurial individual with the ambition to succeed in and work collaboratively in an environment that demands constant multi-tasking and liaison across regional offices, investment platforms and time-zones
  • Pro-active attitude and approach to work that can help the team identify opportunities to do things better/differently in order to optimize the team’s success
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills, with the ability to build and maintain trusted relationships across all levels and represent Lazard positively to external contacts
  • Accountability and willingness to take initiative to independently learn and continuously improve output
